Mother’s Day rolls around every year, and as teachers, we want to create something special for the significant people in our student’s lives.
We know it isn’t easy coming up with ideas that are simple and also effective, that is why we put this post together.
These are our top 3 go-to gift ideas for Mother’s Day. The best part about these suggestions is you can use them for anyone special and important in a child’s life (not just mums). For us, it is important that those children who don’t have a traditional family at home still feel included and valued by doing the same activity as the rest of the class.

The Mother’s Day Love Jar
We have created these in our own classrooms for years now. When our colleagues kept asking how to make them, we knew it was time to create a resource so all teachers could easily recreate the Love Jar.
Students bring in a recycled jar from home and fill it with messages of love for their mum (or special someone). The first year we did this, we went freestyle and let the students write whatever they wanted. Once we created scaffolded message tags, we found these gifts a lot easier to create.
Teacher tip: You aren’t limited to jars for this gift idea. If you are running low on time, we have seen teachers create them with paper bags, snap-lock bags, and envelopes and they have all looked equally as great!
Directed Drawing
Directed drawings are a simple idea and so easy to get right. You could get your students to draw a portrait of themselves or do a directed drawing of a butterfly, a bunch of flowers, or anything else that tickles your fancy. There are great resources online that have directed drawings ready to go, we really like Art for Kids Hub on YouTube.
Teacher Tip: If you want to take your drawings to the next level, laminate them and cut up some old magnets to attach to the back. Your student’s artworks will look great on their fridge at home.
Everlasting Flowers
An everlasting flower filled with the sweetest messages just for Mum is another great gift / craft idea.
This 3D flower template is super easy to use and all you need are a few extra materials to construct a flower that will never wilt or require watering. It is also a fun and unique alternative to making a card.
