1. Why UNO cards?
Great question! While you can absolutely use a regular deck of playing cards with our games (more on that later), UNO cards have a few unique benefits that make them extra teacher- and student-friendly:
❤️ Colourful and kid-friendly – The bright designs grab students’ attention and make the games feel playful from the get-go.
💛 Numbers range from 0–9 – Unlike a normal deck of cards (which doesn’t include a zero), UNO cards provide that all-important placeholder, opening up more possibilities for maths activities.
💚 No picture card confusion – With UNO cards, you don’t need to worry about Jacks, Queens, and Kings. It’s straight numbers, which means less distraction and easier to get started with the games.
💙 More inclusive for learners – Some students can find the faces and symbols on a regular deck overwhelming or distracting. UNO cards keep things clear and accessible for everyone.
❤️ Easy to source – You don’t need to spend a fortune. We often grab ours from thrift shops or second-hand stores, which makes them an affordable classroom staple (we share ore ways to source UNO cards a little later).
💛 Bigger packs – UNO decks come with more cards than a standard deck. That means you’ve got more to work with, and if a few cards get lost or damaged, it won’t derail your games.
All these reasons make UNO the perfect choice for maths games that are engaging, simple to manage, and inclusive for every learner in your class.
2. How many UNO packs do I need?
This is easily our most common question. The short answer: we suggest one deck of UNO cards for every three to four students.
Why? This number strikes the perfect balance between group collaboration and ease of play. With 1 pack for every 3-4 students, there are enough cards for each student to participate fully and keep the games flowing smoothly.
If you’re running math groups, having multiple decks allows you to set up rotations where several groups can play simultaneously.
3. Can I use normal playing cards?
Yes, absolutely! We designed our UNO Math Games to be flexible. If you don’t have UNO cards handy, simply grab a deck of standard playing cards and remove the royal cards and the 10s before you start.
UNO cards are great because of their bright colours and instant recognition factor (kids just love them!). But playing cards work just as well if you’re looking for a budget-friendly option or already have a stack tucked away in your classroom cupboards.
4. What age group are the UNO Math games for?
We’ve designed our UNO Math Games to suit a wide range of learners, from Kindergarten through to Grade 6.
Each resource is differentiated and tailored to the developmental stage of your students, so whether you’re introducing counting and number recognition in the early years, or diving into fractions, decimals, and more complex operations in the upper years, there’s a version for you.
Teachers love that the games grow with their students, the same resource can be used throughout the year.
5. How should I store the games?
We’re teachers too, so we know the struggle of keeping things organised and ready-to-go. The good news? These games are low-prep and simple to store.
Here are a few of our favourite methods:
- Write-and-wipe sleeves: Print each game once, slip it into a sleeve, and let students use whiteboard markers. A quick wipe and it’s ready for the next group.

- Plastic document boxes: A budget-friendly alternative that works just as well.

- Display folders: Perfect for keeping all your UNO Math Games together in one spot. Students can flick through, grab the game they want, and get started independently.
Whichever method you choose, the goal is the same — easy access for students and less stress for you.
6. Can I translate these resources into my language?
Yes! We love that teachers all over the world are using our games. Each UNO Math Game version comes with editable PowerPoint files, which means you can adjust the text to suit your classroom’s needs.
We’ve seen teachers translate the games into Spanish, French, and even Mandarin. The editable files also give you flexibility if you want to tweak the wording for differentiation, support students with additional needs, or align with your local curriculum terminology.
7. Which version should I get?
This one’s a biggie and for good reason! We’ve created three versions of UNO Math Games for each grade level, from Kindergarten through to Grade 6.
Each version is:
- Unique: No repeated games across versions.
- Curriculum-aligned: Covering key maths concepts like place value, fractions, multiplication, time, and more.
- Differentiated: Activities cater for different abilities within your class.
- Engaging: Designed to feel like play but packed with meaningful practice.
If you’re teaching across multiple grade levels (or just want a big variety of activities to draw from), you might even consider grabbing more than one version. Teachers often tell us that once they try one pack, they’re hooked and come back for the others! Check them out here.
In short, every pack contains different activities and there is no crossover between resources for each grade level.
8. Where can I source UNO cards from?
The good news is you don’t need to spend big to stock up on UNO cards for your classroom. Here are some tried-and-true ideas:
- Thrift or second-hand stores – UNO decks often pop up in op shops at bargain prices.
- Family donations – Ask your school community if they have spare packs at home. Even if they’re missing a few cards, they still work beautifully for most games.
- Discount or dollar stores – These shops sometimes carry cheaper UNO sets, perfect for classroom use.
- Online marketplaces – Sites like eBay, Facebook Marketplace, or even bulk sellers on Amazon can be cost-effective if you want to grab multiple decks at once.
- Colleagues or school storeroom – You might be surprised to find unused packs already floating around your school.
With a little creativity and a keen eye, it’s easy to build up a classroom stash of UNO decks without breaking the budget.
Bonus question: What do I do with the skip, reverse, draw 2 and wild cards?
Most of our UNO maths games use the number cards as number generators, so you generally won’t need the Skip, Wild or Reverse cards. We suggest simply sorting those cards out and putting them aside before starting the activities.
At Rainbow Sky Creations, we believe learning should be fun, practical, and stress-free for teachers. Our UNO Math Games tick all three boxes. They’re easy to prep, flexible for different learners, and, best of all, your students will actually beg to play them.
