Teacher Well-Being: Teaching Shouldn’t Be a One-Woman Show

Have you ever felt like everything is falling on your shoulders in the classroom? Like you’re constantly running on empty, chasing to-do lists, and putting everyone else’s needs ahead of your own? If you’re nodding along, we want you to know this: you’re not alone. And more importantly, it doesn’t have to be this way.

This week on Rainbow Skies for Teachers, we’re diving into one of the most important conversations in education today… teacher well-being. The truth is, teaching was never meant to be a one-woman show. Even global superstars like Beyoncé and Taylor Swift have a team. So why do we keep trying to do it all ourselves?

Here’s a closer look at the five strategies we shared in the episode to help you protect your well-being, reduce overwhelm, and rediscover your spark in the classroom.

1. Build Your Glam Squad

Every teacher deserves a support crew. Whether it’s a mentor down the hall, a colleague who shares resources, a trusted teaching podcast (hello!), or your favourite AI tool that cuts your planning time in half – you don’t have to do this alone.

Creating your own “glam squad” is about leaning into support systems that work for you. That might mean:

  • Curating go-to teaching tools and resources that save you time

  • Reaching out to your teaching community for ideas or encouragement

  • Automating or outsourcing tasks when possible

Support isn’t a weakness. It’s a superpower.

2. Stop Performing for the To-Do List

We’ve all been there. The list that never ends. But what if instead of trying to do it all, you focused on the three most impactful tasks each day?

In the episode, we talk about identifying what actually moves the needle. Not everything is urgent or essential, and constantly performing for an endless list can drain your energy and cloud your priorities.

Try this: each morning, write down your top three priorities. That’s it. This shift can bring a huge sense of clarity and accomplishment, without the burnout.

3. Know When to Drop the Mic

One of the most harmful myths in teaching is that we have to “earn” our rest. But the reality is, rest is not a reward. It’s a requirement.

Just like a headliner wraps up a show and walks offstage, you’re allowed to pause, reset, and take care of yourself. Whether it’s a walk after school, reading a book for fun, or saying “no” to one more commitment, choosing rest is a radical act of self-respect.

And remember, taking care of yourself doesn’t just benefit you, it benefits your students too.

4. Set Boundaries Like a Headliner

Boundaries protect your passion. They also protect your energy, time, and mental health.

Think of boundaries as your backstage pass list. Not everyone gets access, and that’s OK. You are allowed to:

  • Say no to extra responsibilities

  • Leave school at a reasonable hour

  • Log off emails after a set time

  • Guard your weekends or evenings

Teaching is a calling, but it’s not a 24/7 job. By setting boundaries, you’re preserving the space you need to keep showing up as the amazing teacher you are.

5. Play to Your Strengths

Last but not least, remember that you don’t have to be good at everything. Teaching is a team sport, and there’s so much value in sharing the load.

If classroom displays aren’t your thing, swap tasks with a colleague who loves decorating. If lesson planning lights you up, take the lead in that area. By focusing on your strengths and collaborating where possible, you’ll feel more confident and less exhausted.

Teaching is better when we lift each other up.

A Reminder to Every Teacher

You were never meant to do this job alone. The pressure to be everything to everyone is heavy, but it’s not the only way. By building support, prioritising what matters, resting without guilt, holding boundaries, and leaning into your strengths, you can protect your teacher well-being and rediscover the joy in your work.

This episode is your reminder that you are doing an incredible job.

Let’s work smarter, not harder. You’ve got this.
