How many UNO decks do I actually need?

The question every teacher asks before they buy. Put your class size in.

Other UNO versions work too. UNO Express, travel packs, whatever you have. Just check the deck first, some versions have more or fewer cards than the standard one.
No UNO? Playing cards do the job. Just take out the 10s and the royals and you are good to go.
You do not need a full deck. A handful of cards each is plenty. There is no order to them, so whatever they get is fine.
The same cards run every game. One set of decks, loads of different games, all year long.

What are UNO Math Games?

Our UNO Math Games use regular UNO cards as a hands-on tool for practising important math skills.

Instead of introducing students to a completely new game every time you want them to practise a skill, they use a familiar deck of cards across a whole range of activities.

Depending on the grade and pack, students can practise skills including number sense, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, place value, measurement and more.

The best part? Once students understand how to use the games, you can pull them out again and again for quick, meaningful math practice (plus we hear, time and time again, kids absolutely love them!)

Do I need special UNO cards?

Nope! Our activities are designed to work with regular UNO cards.

For most games, you’ll simply remove the action cards, wild cards and any other cards you don’t need before students begin. Each activity includes instructions so you know exactly what you need to get started.

You can also use playing cards. Just remove the 10s and the royal cards, and you are good to go!

Which UNO Math Games pack should I choose?

This depends on the age of your students and the skills you want them to practise.

We have UNO Math Games designed for Preschool, Kindergarten, Grades 1-2, Grades 3-4 and Grades 5-6, with multiple versions available for each grade band.

If you’re not sure where to begin, that’s exactly why we created the quiz at the top of this page. Answer a few simple questions and it will point you towards the pack that makes the most sense for your classroom.

Do I need to teach every game?

Definitely not.

Think of your UNO Math Games as a toolbox rather than a program you need to work through from beginning to end.

Choose the games that match what you’re teaching or the skills your students need more practice with. They work beautifully for math centres, small groups, partner work, early finishers, intervention and math fluency practice.

If you purchase the bundle, you will have math games that will last you all year long!

Our Favourite UNO Math Games

After creating a lot of UNO Math Games over the years, you’d think we’d be able to choose a favourite easily! But it is like choosing your favourite student in your class… hahaha (well probably not quite like that!)

Ashleigh’s pick: Flip Its (Grade 3-4 Version 2)

I love that this is a hands-on way to teach inverse operations when it comes to multiplication. It is really visual, and kids are actually choosing the numbers and seeing with their own eyes that, if they know one fact, they actually know four.

Alisha’s pick: Doubles (Grade 1-2 Version 4)

I love this game because it is a core skill that we need our grade 1 and grade 2 kids to master. Is such an easy way to get them to practise over and over again without the dread of multiple worksheets.

And if you asked our own kids, you’d probably get completely different answers again!

That’s one of the things we love most about using UNO cards to teach math. One little deck of cards can be used in so many different ways, across different skills and grade levels.

Why do we love using UNO cards to teach math?

As teachers, we’ve always believed that practising a skill doesn’t automatically mean handing students another worksheet.

We want students talking, thinking, playing and actually wanting to practise. That’s why UNO cards have become one of our favourite tools for hands-on math practice. They’re simple, familiar and incredibly versatile. And when students ask to play a math game again, you know you’re onto something good!
