New Teacher: Here are 5 Strategies to Conquer Mid-Year Fatigue

As a new teacher, reaching the midpoint of the school year can often feel like hitting a solid brick wall. 

The initial excitement and energy that carried you through the first few months may start to wane, leaving you feeling fatigued and overwhelmed – this is totally normal!

Here are five effective strategies to help you pick up the pace, reinspire yourself, and rebuild your momentum, because we are here to support you throughout your entire first year of teaching! (Stick around because number 5 is our favourite).

5 Strategies to Conquer Mid-Year Fatigue as a New Teacher

1. Reflect and Celebrate Small Wins

Take some time to reflect on the progress you and your students have made since the beginning of the school year. We often move forward instead of stopping and taking the time to admire what we have achieved.  

Celebrating small wins can help you recognise the positive impact you’ve had. Here are 3 ways you can celebrate the small victories as a new teacher:

Keep a Success Journal

Write down daily or weekly accomplishments, no matter how small. This could include a student’s improvement, a lesson that went well, or positive feedback from a colleague or parent.

Share Successes

Share your successes with a mentor, colleague, your family and friends or through social media groups for teachers. Receiving external validation and encouragement can reinforce your sense of achievement.

Have a folder of special items

Keep any special messages, drawings or cards inside a folder. If you have a day when you are feeling a little low, it is a great place to go to remind you that you are making a difference. (We still have our folders that we have been adding to for 15+ years!)

Tech Tip: We strongly advise you to also have a folder in your email inbox where you can store any of those gushing emails from your leadership team, students or parents. Not only will it build you up when you need it, these messages might also help you next time you are applying for a job or going for an interview.

 

2. Reconnect with Your Passion

Reignite the passion that led you to teaching in the first place by reconnecting with the aspects of the job that you love. This will look different for everyone, for me I love to teach a lesson (usually something creative) that is student lead. The students and I get lost in the learning and it reminds me what I truly love about the job – connecting with my students and seeing them grow their own love of learning.  

Here are a few other examples to help you reignite that passion:

* Engage in professional development that focus on areas of interest or new teaching methods. Learning new skills and ideas can rejuvenate your enthusiasm for teaching.

* Introduce creative and fun projects into your curriculum that both you and your students can enjoy. This can break the routine and bring fresh excitement into your classroom.

* Follow some inspirational teaching accounts on social media for some fun and fresh ideas (psst: Start with @rainbowskycreations).

3. Prioritise Self-Care and Well-being

At this point, we may be a broken record BUT it is vital that you take care of yourself. 

Self-care is crucial to maintaining your energy and enthusiasm.

This can look like setting boundaries, especially if you haven’t been great at providing clear boundaries between work and personal time so far this year.

It might be, incorporating mindfulness practices such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or yoga into your daily routine to reduce stress and improve your mental well-being.

Or it could be about staying active with regular physical activity which will boost your energy levels and improve your mood. Even a short walk during your lunch break can make a significant difference.

Remember self-care activities help you relax and recharge and therefore will help you be the best teacher possible for the students in your care.

4. Build a Support Network

Having a strong support network can provide you with the encouragement and advice you need to overcome challenges. 

If you haven’t got one yet, find a mentor who can offer guidance and support. It doesn’t need to be someone at your school, it may even be an online mentor, like us!

Also build relationships with fellow teachers, both within your school and through online communities. Sharing experiences, tips, and resources can provide mutual support and inspiration as well as a fresh perspective when you need it.
