What do cheerleaders and teachers have in common?
We have just finished watching the Netflix documentary “America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders,” and couldn’t help but draw similarities to teacher life (yes, we went there!)
In the documentary, viewers get an inside look at the lives of the dedicated women who make up one of the most iconic cheerleading squads in the world. Their journey is one of passion, hard work, and relentless pursuit of excellence. Interestingly, many aspects of their experiences resonate deeply with the lives of teachers.
Despite the differences in their roles, cheerleaders and teachers share several common traits that underline the importance of dedication, perseverance, and the impact they have on others.
Passion and Dedication
Cheerleaders: Cheerleaders invest significant time and effort into training and practice. Balancing multiple responsibilities, including other jobs or study, they push through physical and emotional challenges driven by their passion for cheerleading. Their dedication to perfecting routines and maintaining peak physical fitness is a testament to their commitment.
Teachers: Similarly, teachers are incredibly dedicated to their profession. They often work long hours beyond the school day, preparing lessons, marking work, meeting with parents and providing support to their students. Public Scrutiny and Performance Pressure
Cheerleaders: Performing in front of large audiences, cheerleaders are subject to public scrutiny. Their appearance, performance, and behaviour are often judged by the public and media, adding pressure to maintain a high standard. The expectation to deliver flawless performances can be overwhelming, yet they rise to the occasion time and again.
Teachers: Teachers also face constant evaluation from the media, administrators, parents, and sometimes students. Their teaching methods, classroom management, and student performance are regularly scrutinised. The pressure to meet educational standards and improve student outcomes can be intense, but teachers continuously strive to achieve these goals.
Teamwork and Collaboration
Cheerleaders: Cheerleading is a team effort. Strong collaboration and trust among team members are essential to executing complex routines and supporting one another. A cohesive team is crucial for successful performances and overall team morale.
Teachers: In the educational world, collaboration is equally important. Teachers often work together on curriculum planning, professional development, and school-wide initiatives. Building strong relationships with colleagues creates a supportive work environment and enhances the effectiveness of teaching strategies.

Teachers: Teaching offers numerous opportunities for career advancement through additional certifications, advanced degrees, and leadership roles within schools or districts. The profession provides a stable career path with potential for long-term growth and development in education.
Mentorship and Role Models
Cheerleaders: As role models for young fans and aspiring cheerleaders, these athletes mentor younger team members and community members, inspiring them through their achievements and work ethic. Their leadership, perseverance, and positivity influence those who look up to them.
Teachers: Teachers play a crucial role as mentors and role models for their students. They guide, support, and inspire students to achieve their full potential. Through their actions and dedication, teachers impart important life skills and values, shaping the future generation.
Low Wages
Cheerleaders: We learn in the documentary that Cheerleaders don’t get paid much to be part of the DCC team…
Teachers: It goes without saying that teachers are also under paid!
